How do we review an application for admission?

By Lynn Holcomb on January 5, 2013

Colgate’s application deadline is coming up soon on January 15. You might be wondering what will happen to your application over the next few months. To give you an idea of what’s involved in the selection of the Colgate Class of 2017, we want to provide you with a brief glimpse of the process.

At Colgate, we take great pride in the time and energy that we spend selecting the students to join the Colgate community. We do so with a thorough analysis of the entire application.

The application
We evaluate all academic credentials, including a student’s course selection, performance in class, recommendations, writing in the essays, and standardized test scores. In addition to the academic review, we look closely at a student’s personal profile. We are able to determine the personal profile through the theme of the written essays, extracurricular accomplishments, and the character profile defined by the recommendations.

The person that emerges from each application is very unique. It is a wonderful experience for our staff to get to know applicants personally through the written materials.

The selection process
Every file is thoroughly reviewed by at least two different staff members. Many applicants are then discussed in committee. The admission staff member assigned to your school will serve as the regional expert on your application.

Don’t forget to have your guidance counselor submit your mid-year grades once they are available. Senior grades are very important to our selection conversation.

Final decisions
Since Colgate is a small school, our staff has adopted a real hands-on approach to get to know our applicants. After all, we want to be certain that we are making the best decisions for the future of the Colgate student body. We are fortunate to have a committed dean who knows all the applicants and takes the time to personally comment on every acceptance that is made.

It may seem like a long wait until the end of March when you will hear the news about your application to Colgate. In the meantime, please understand that we are working hard to get to know the candidates. We look forward to reading your application and learning more about you!
