Poet Alysia Harris Blew Me Away

By Sarah Chandler '16 on March 4, 2014

On Tuesday night, I got to watch Alysia Harris perform. Alysia is a a two-time national spoken word champion, a member of the winning BNV 2007 and CUPSI 2007 teams, and was featured in the HBO Documentary Russell Simmons Presents: Brave New Voices. She has performed with the likes of Saul Williams, Buddy Wakefield, Carlos Andres Gomez, Anis Mojgani, Rita Dove, and Elizabeth Alexander. Alysia Harris has written and performed poems that span over topics such as “hooking up,” body image, queer identities, race, ethnicity, her spiritual journey, relationships, love, family etc. Watching her perform was inspiring, incredible, and deeply moving. One of my favorite poems was “Paris in the Rain” which was about falling in love in Paris, with Paris. In between her recitations and in the Question and Answer session after, Alysia spoke candidly about her inspirations, her writing process and her life. I am so glad I got a chance to see this amazing performer in person.
